This morning saw the release of two excellent wines at very reasonable prices: Leoville Barton at GBP 759 and Grand Puy Lacoste at GBP 672.
BI favourite Grand Puy Lacoste did not disappoint in 2018, with a fabulous, precise, almost Burgundian freshness to it which played beautifully alongside the depth of fruit and rich, ripe tannins. Highly rated by the critics, it’s been labelled “Another success from Grand-Puy-Lacoste” (Jane Anson) and “one of the most elegant and finely-tuned wines of the vintage.” (Matthew Jukes). There’s simply no question that this will be a beautiful wine to have in your cellar for many decades of enjoyment – a bona fide classic.
Leoville Barton has been one of the most consistent performers over the past two decades coaxing masses of complexity, weight and charm out of their venerable slice of St Julien terroir and the 2018 is no exception – in fact it’s right up there with the 2016 although it may prove to be even longer lived.
