The wines of the Clarence Dillon stable have been released this morning with superb quality and excellent pricing. Whilst the Grand Vins of La Mission Haut Brion and Haut Brion were immediately sold out to previous years’ buyers, there is a superb opportunity to get a slice of these Chateaux in what will certainly be a famous vintage at these particular neighbouring addresses.
The second wines of top wines have long been the smartest buy in Bordeaux and never more than in 2019. Both La Chapelle de la Mission, the second wine of the 98-100pt rated La Mission, and Le Clarence de Haut Brion have been highly rated by the critics and are available at a fraction of the price of their big brothers.
95-96pts James Suckling “This has fascinating, smoky, bark, dried-meat and crushed-berry character. It’s full-bodied with crushed stone, tobacco and dried meat. Extremely long and flavorful.”
92-94pts LPB, robertparker.com “The 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a blend of 72.8% Merlot, 16.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10.9% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 10th of September to the 3rd of October. The estimated label alcohol degree is 15%. With a deep garnet-purple color, it springs from the glass with vivacious notes of crushed black and red plums, redcurrant jelly and wild blueberries plus suggestions of forest floor, lilacs, black olives and menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate practically quivers with energy, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering aniseed note. Simply delicious!”

In 2011 Prince Robert of Luxembourg and his Clarence Dillon estate of wines added some incredible St Emilion vines to their portfolio, which of course already included the legendary La Mission and Haut Brion estates. The two estates they purchased, featuring some of the steepest slopes and most complex soils on the famous limestone ‘cotes’, were combined to create a new property: Quintus. The estate has launched its 2019 wines today with a dramatic, almost 30% price reduction from last year: the wine is now available at GBP 800 per 12 and with a 94-96+pt score from Lisa Perrotti-Brown (“impactful!”) not to mention an even higher 96-97 from James Suckling (“Extremely intense”) it is well worth looking at.
96-97pts James Suckling “One of the firmest, most structured Quintus with lots of beautiful fruit and powerful tannins. It’s a very classically structured red with blackberry and blueberry character. Lavender and spice underneath. Extremely intense. 55% merlot and 45% cabernet.”
94-96+pts LPB, robertparker.com “The 2019 Quintus is a blend of 55.4% Merlot and 44.6% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 19th of September to the 9th of October. The estimated alcohol degree on the label is 15%. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sails out of the glass with intense scents of plum preserves, blueberry pie and boysenberries with nuances of Chinese five spice, mocha, dried lavender and licorice plus a waft of chargrill. Full-bodied, the decadently fruited palate is jam-packed with layers of blue and black fruit preserves, supported by beautifully plush, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with an epically long, exotic spice-laced finish. Impactful!”
