Giscours 2019

 £422 per 12

A wine which has really become a personal favourite over the past few years is the Margaux Giscours, which has been released today at GBP 422. This is a reduction of almost 25% on the 2018 release and given the quality of the vintage looks a very good buy indeed. Our man in Hong Kong was wowed by it when he tasted it with James Suckling at his wine bar earlier this week.

96-97pts James Suckling “Lots of deep blue fruit with blackberries and grape skins, as well as tar and asphalt. Lead, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight with powerful, defined tannins, surrounded by attractive ripe fruit. Serious. Reminds me of the excellent 1975. A blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot.”

93-95pts Jeb Dunnuck “Based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, the 2019 Château Giscours is another stunning 2019. Deep purple, with a fresh yet concentrated style on the palate, it has lots of red, black, and blue fruits as well as notes of sandalwood, flowery incense, and graphite. It's not massive, by any means, yet is flawlessly balanced and has integrated acidity, followed by a great finish. It's very much in the more precise, pretty, elegant style of this vintage yet still packs plenty of mid-palate depth. Give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 25 years or so.”

Additional highlights from the week…

2019 Capbern

£180/12 IB

"This is a gorgeous young sample with wonderful blue fruit and spices, as well as a nice overlay of pretty wood. Medium to full body and firm, silky tannins. Hints of minerals. Better than 2018."

93-94 pts Wine Advocate

2019 Malartic Lagraviere

 £330/12 IB

"This elegance and beauty of this young wine is really something. Incense, sandalwood, currants and chocolate come through on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied, very fine-tannined and persistent. Sophisticated. Another 2016?"

95-96 pts James Suckling

2019 Ormes de Pez

£210/12 IB

“Plenty of punch in this Ormes de Pez, full of rich ripe black fruits, traces of exotic spices of cinnamon and saffron from the heat of the summer, and brilliant value if looking for personality and appellation signature in St Estèphe. Blend completed with 3% Petit Verdot.”

92-93 pts Decanter

2019 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge

£495/12 IB

“The chocolate, walnut, dark-fruit and stone character is attractive. It’s full-bodied and very tight and linear with chewy yet polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Lots of intensity and complexity here, as always.”

96-97 pts James Suckling
