Drouin 2000 Early Landed Calvados
We love a dangerously drinkable Calvados and here is a rare opportunity to buy a piece of history too. Not only is it from the ‘Last of the Early Landed’ but also from the only Calvados producer to win the IWSC ‘European Spirit Producer of the Year’ award. This is an exceptional Calvados, produced using the most traditional of methods.
Christian Drouin makes magnificent Vintage Calvados on his Coeur de Lion estate in the Pays d’Auge. In 2000 however, he distilled an exceptional vintage and sent one particular barrel (a cask that had previously been used to age Sherry) to Bristol. This will never happen again because AOC regulations now prohibit the aging of Calvados outside the borders of Normandy. Christian Drouin has now taken back a few bottles for his own family meaning only 174 remain from the cask.
Christian Drouin only extracts limited liquid from pomace during pressing, on top of that the sublime 2000 vintage is naturally intensely fruity. After maturation in a former sherry cask, its aging in a humid warehouse in Bristol has enabled it to develop extraordinary layers of fruit and mellowness.
The Coeur de Lion is a traditional 17th century orchard of ‘tall standards” and this, along with the orchards of the ‘Fiefs Saint-Anne’ estate produces the apples used to make his Calvados.
