Exclusive Hine 1986 Vintage Cognac
Hine initiated the concept of making rarities and vintage cognacs commercially available throughout the world. Over the centuries, the Hine family has acquired the intuitive skill of judging when an individual young cognac has the potential to develop into something very special. Hine only produce small quantities, concentrating on the very best; it was this attention to detail and commitment to perfection that resulted in the award of the Royal Warrant in 1962 – making Hine the only Cognac house to hold such a high office. To celebrate the 90th birthday of H.M. The Queen, Hine are releasing a magnificent Jarnac-Matured 1986 vintage Cognac.
In an exceptional year Hine's Cellar Master, Eric Forget, sets aside a few casks of Grande Champagne cognacs to be aged as single vintages. The vines need dry, sunny weather in the days leading up to harvest time. If the weather has been fair throughout the growing season, it is likely, but by no means certain, that the resulting cognacs will become single vintages. 1986 provided ideal conditions: Bernard Hine recalls, “We had a much colder than average winter in 1986 followed by good sunny spells during the summer which are key ingredients for vinifying high quality wines for distillation into fine eaux-de-vie.” The resulting Cognac was aged in the 18th century cellars beneath Hine’s offices in Jarnac.
In Jarnac, the River Charente is close to the Chai des Millésimes, and the cellar has very distinctive conditions for ageing. The humidity level is high, varying between 70 and 90%. The cellar is just two metres below the level of the Charente and subject to temperature fluctuations which can vary between 6.5°C in winter and 20.5°C during the summer. Thus the ageing conditions in the Chai des Millésimes in Jarnac lend the cognacs greater complexity and structure; with a richer bouquet, more pronounced oaky notes and the much prized “rancio”, so characteristic of old cognacs.

Tasting Notes and Scores
A rich vintage. The eaux-de-vie of 1986 are extremely delicate with much complexity and a long finish on the palate. Powerful bouquet of pipe tobacco, fruity notes of white peach, oak wood and spices.
