Zarate Albarino Balado Vineyard 2015
The perfect thirst-quencher for these balmy summer evenings is often difficult to come by - but we believe we have discovered it in the form of this textbook Albariño from Zarate, the true pioneers of this Spanish grape.
Zarate is a family-owned estate located in Meaño, the heart of the Salnés Valley in the Rías Baixas appellation. The vineyard is contained within the grounds of a Manor built in the 16th century and was totally restored during the 18th century. The estate's wine philosophy, which adheres to natural viticultural methods for its century-old vines, is that each plot should express the true character of its terroir and grape variety. Since the 2000 vintage, Eulogio Pomares, Zarate's viticulturist and winemaker, has devoted all his time and energy looking after the estate's vineyard and producing its Albariño. Eulogio studied oenology in Bordeaux and, interestingly, in Germany where he investigated the parallels between Albariño and Riesling which, despite being entirely different varieties, were something of a fascination for Eulogio due to their similarity in potential particularly in regard to their age-worthiness and pronounced acidity.
This devotion and respect to viticulture reaps all kind of rewards which are flaunted in Zarate’s El Balado. The wine comes from two plots on south facing, granite vineyards which were planted in the 1950s. El Balado has seen 3 months on thick lees which contributes towards the phenomenal amplitude in the mouth, and a further 6 months on fine lees which allows for the intense and complex aromas on the nose.
“Zárate has come to the forefront in the last few years, given the quality and consistency of their wines.” The Wine Advocate
We tried a bottle in the office today and it is truly shining! Intense and moreish yet sophisticated and balanced, it has it all… We would very much advise getting a case or two delivered to enjoy in the sunshine and over the next 4-5 years.

94 points BI, “The 2015 Balado is pure Albariño from two small plots that were replanted in the 1950s. The must was obtained by a long and soft pressing and fermented in stainless steel with natural yeasts. The wine is kept in contact with the lees for three months, plus a further six months in contact with the fine lees without bâttonage or malolactic fermentation. The nose is intense and elegant with a beautiful citrusy character. Because they bottle relativelyearly the wine has a fantastic clean acidity which combined with the minerality of the granite soil, makes your palate salivate with apricot and clementine notes”
