Vina Real Gran Reserva 2011
Our visit to Rioja last year delivered first-hand experience of four of the leading producers in the region: one of the finest of these was CVNE – Compania Vinicole del Norte de Espana. Founded in 1879, CVNE is a remarkable producer with three separate estates; this dynamic organisation offers both impressive tasting rooms and spotlessly professional chais, alongside miles of extraordinary, mould-lined old cellars packed to the rafters (quite literally) with peacefully slumbering barrels and bottles, just waiting for their chance to shine. And when they finally get their moment they do so in epic style with layers of remarkable spice-soaked, fruit-rich flavours and bewildering aromatics.
Located on the opposite side of the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range lies the region of Rioja Alavesa, home to CVNE’s Vina Real estate, where the weather is more affected by the Mediterranean and the soil formed with more dense calcareous and clay soils. The wines here are closer in style to Burgundy or even the northern Rhone, with a beautiful peppery quality and more red fruit characters.
Today we have tasted together a bottle of the 2011 Vina Real Gran Reserva which has just received 97 points in the 2018 Decanter Wine World Awards. We have been all buying CVNE wines for years so we are quite literally putting our money where our mouth is... we strongly suggest you follow suit with this incredible new release.

Tasting Notes and Scores
An intense nose with a whiff of leather, mushroom, vanilla oak and baked damp earth. It’s a fascinating red with juicy red fruit, fresh acidity and a spicy finish that gives real pleasure. Sinewy tannins resolve themselves on the finish in an enjoyable, juicy flourish. - Decanter, decanter.com
