Vina del Olivo, Contino 2016
Created in 1973 by founder Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana (C.V.N.E), Contino represents the first ‘chateau’ concept in Rioja. The history of the property however, dates from the 16th century. The “contino” was the officer in charge of a garrison of a hundred soldiers who protected the royal family "de contino” from the time of the Catholic Monarchs onwards.
Named after the near 700-year-old olive tree with which the vines share their unique landscape, Viña del Olivo is an exceptional vineyard, producing wines of great depth and elegance. Seen as contemporary in style but deeply rooted in tradition, Vina del Olivo is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. Once almost extinct, Graciano has seen a resurgence, especially by Contino, as it brings great perfume, harmony and structure to the resulting wines.
Rated as ‘Very Good’ by Rioja Denominacion de Origen Calificada, 2016 was characterised by an exciting combination of freshness and phenolic ripeness. While it was a hot dry summer, the best plots were able to show their full potential in terms of intensity of flavors combined with softness and roundness of tannins.
The bottle opened today in the office showed amazing complexity and is without a doubt a world-class wine. With 98Pts and listed as the second best Spanish wine in James Suckling’s top 100 wines of 2018, Vina del Olivo 2016 is an utter bargain which can be enjoyed straight away or at any time within the next 10-15 years.
