Niepoort Vintage Port 2017
“A fatal attraction with an insane potential for ageing, yet unbelievably perfect in its youth… possibly our finest Vintage Port since 1945.”Dirk Niepoort
Born into a Port family, Dirk Niepoort has the Douro running through his veins. One of the most gifted, experimental and interesting winemakers of his generation, Dirk has long created a range of both still and fortified wines from his native country; while the grand names of Taylor’s, Fonseca and the like make the biggest headlines in the latter category, Dirk has continued to create a full range of exceptional quality Ports – including some of the best, and best value, Tawny Ports that we have ever tasted. But today is about the big boy, Le Grand Fromage: the newly-declared Niepoort 2017 Vintage Port.
A number of houses have chosen to declare 2017 as a Vintage year, some for the second year in a row, and Dirk Niepoort has absolutely knocked it out of the park with his 2017. This remarkable wine – which Dirk describes memorably as ‘possibly our finest Vintage Port since 1945’ – is the product of a season defined by intense heat and record low levels of rainfall. However as the season wore on, cool (and even some cold) nights helped the grapes to retain the vital freshness that gives the 2017 its rare, almost unique, sense of vibrancy and freshness – which is of course balanced by Dirk’s signature power, richness of fruit and towering structure.
There is no doubt that Vintage Port remains the greatest value Fine Wine one can buy. The level of quality it delivers for the price is simply unbeatable and while the wines will be virtually immortal (as today’s encounter with both the Niepoort 1942 and 1863 showed) no longer does one have to wait decades for them to be approachable. Winemaking techniques and the quality of raw materials have both improved beyond comprehension and as such the wines begin their life more balanced, and enjoy a vast, almost eternal, drinking window.
Whether for yourself, your children, or your children’s children – buy now safe in the knowledge that you have something truly remarkable in your cellar.

Tasting Notes and Scores
Fantastically dark and brooding, but with intoxicating spice and dark berry fruits and a real earth undertones. The palate is remarkably fresh and alive, with the rich, sweet, dark berry fruits and spice layered and textured, with beautifully elegant but very present tannins. It has real length and elegance; undoubtedly one of the greatest young ports I have been lucky enough to taste.
