Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 167
“For me, Krug is more than a Champagne. It is a word that stands for artistry, tradition, craftsmanship, and moments of pure pleasure…
If the opportunity arises, never miss the chance to drink a Krug!” Richard Juhlin
We are delighted to offer you the new release of Krug Grande Cuvee NV - the Edition 167.
Three years ago, in an exciting new move from Maison Krug, every bottle of Grande Cuvée produced would carry an ‘Edition’ number which clarifies the year on which the Champagne is based. The first ‘Edition’ of Krug Grand Cuvée (the 163) was based on the superb 2007 vintage and has been a huge success. The following Editions were so popular that they sold out within a few days. We have therefore been waiting patiently for a few months for more Grande Cuvee to be released from Krug. At last we are able to offer you today the new Edition 167.
Based on the superb 2011 vintage the Edition 167 is stunningly good! It shows all the hallmarks of the great 2011 vintage and also possesses a fantastic aging potential.
A blend of 191 wines spread across 13 different years, this new ‘Edition 167’ contains reserve wines going back to 1995 and has been maturing slowly for 8 years in the Maison’s cellars – and yet it is still a baby in Krug terms. It is magic straight off the bat but we cannot tell you how valuable it is to have some stashed away, gaining intensity, richness and complexity. This is already one of the most rewarding wines you can drink and a few extra years just improve the experience exponentially; with the new edition numbering making it considerably easier to track and know exactly which iteration (and thus age) of Krug you are drinking, the Grand Cuvée has become even more collectable and desirable.
As you will know by now we are sincere acolytes of the wines of Krug. There is very little in the world of Champagne that compares with Krug Grande Cuvée, whether it be in terms of quality, ageability, ambition, or indeed value. The complexity required to make a completely consistent, multi-vintage blend which reaches the highest standards, year after year, is enormous; in fact, one might consider it an almost futile undertaking. Thank goodness for us that founder Joseph Krug was not so pragmatic for we would not have the complete, utter and unfailing joy that comes with every single bottle of Grande Cuvée.
Grande Cuvée is a show-stoppingly gorgeous Champagne and it actually gets even better over decades, drinking stunningly well for far longer than the vast majority of vintage Prestige Cuvées from other Champagne Houses. Releases from the 1970s with 1950s base wines are out of this world! Recent tastings of various Editions going back to the 158th have also showed us how well Grande Cuvee ages. The new Edition 167 is already super pure and vibrant and will undoubtedly follow the same path!

Tasting Notes and Scores
A rich and dense Champagne with complexity and decadence, in a fresh and agile way. Very driven and energetic with praline, cooked apples and hints of honey. Some bread dough, but subtle and vivid. Very tight and focused. Racy and direct. Bright edition. Very fine textured. Youngest wine in the blend is 2011. Edition 167. Drink now.
