Situated around the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa’s largely coastal vineyards (in Constantia, Stellenbosch and Paarl) benefit from the cooling breezes of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. However, it is not only the coasts that offer producers such diversity; throughout the region runs a group of mountain ranges which allows style diversity from a variety of site climates through differing altitudes, soil types and aspects.
South Africa is most notoriously known for its Pinotage – a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. A distinctive grape expressive of the country’s terroir, it has gained an international following but international varieties are also widely grown here. Chenin Blanc is the country’s most widely planted grape variety because of its versatility. It can produce a range of styles from dry to sweet, as well as fresher through to more toasty and barrel-aged wines, from producers such as Eden Sadie, Hamilton Russell and Klein Constantia.
