Southern France
At the end of the Rhône Valley lies the beginning of the area known as Southern France. Stretching along the coast from the Pyrenees on the Spanish border, to the Alps on the border with Italy, the region is divided into three regions; Languedoc and Roussillon to the west and Provence to the east. Spread over such a vast distance, it is no surprise that the styles are extremely varied.
This region has undergone something of a renaissance in recent history, as evidenced by the high calibre roses made by Château d’Escalans. Style and quality has improved dramatically, and the grape varieties permitted has expanded alongside the usual quartet; Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
