Glenfiddich

Background

In 1886 William Grant (pictured here with his wife), his seven sons, two daughters and one stone mason began to build a distillery by hand, stone by stone. After a year of hard labour it was ready and William named it Glenfiddich.

Later it was the very same William Grant & Sons who, in 1964, pioneered a controversial new drink they called ‘single malt’; this was a Glenfiddich 8 year old. At the time, malts were only produced to supply the blended whisky producers.

Today, Glenfiddich continues as a Chateau-style distillery that produces its whisky entirely on the premises, from distillation to cask ageing to bottling and it is also one of the few single malt distilleries to remain entirely family owned.
