This fourth generation family Burgundian domaine of 4.5 hectares (11.1 acres) with vines of an average age of 45 years, is situated in Morey Saint Denis. The family home and cellars (which are still in use) date from 1789.
The young and articulate Stephane Magnien took over the wine-making from his father Jean-Paul in 2007. He boasts that their vines have never been treated with herbicides and pesticides preferring natural organic methods, combined with a goal of producing wines with ‘true expression of terroir’, freshness and elegance. In general, the wines are neither filtered nor fined. The 2010 Morey St Denis & Chambolle village wines display lovely complexity, the Morey 1er cru Faconnieres admirable aromas & finesse, while the more robust Charmes Chambertin and elegant, long Clos Saint Denis are excellent grands crus with great pedigree.
Stephane is a notable new addition to the list of talented young winemakers now making a name for themselves in the international wine market. It is a shame the quantities are so limited!
