Podere Poggio Scalette was founded as in 1991 when Vittorio Fiore and his wife Adriana Assjè di Marcorà acquired several plots of land and a rural building on the hill of Ruffoli, in the township of Greve in Chianti, in the very heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. The estate is directly run by Adriana Assjè di Marcorà and her son Jurij Fiore (a graduate of the School of Viticulture and Oenology of Beaune in Burgundy) with the overall supervision of Vittorio Fiore. Their terraced vineyards are known locally as “Il Carbonaione” and planted primarily with Sangiovese. Many of the vines are over 80 years old, contributing to the concentration and mineral purity of the fruit they produce. Il Carbonaione is the name given to Jurij’s principal wine, a Chianti Classico of exceptional quality and amazing ageability: indeed, their first vintage, 1992 (which incidentally was a fairly shocking vintage in the region) is still drinking stunningly well today. Since the millennium, they have expanded their vineyard holding and planted other non-indigenous grapes including Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot – the latter of which make up their super-cuvee ‘Capogatto’.
