Specogna

Background

The quality of the fruit grown by Graziano Specogna and his family is impeccable. As a result, he is keen to get as much flavour as possible out of the grapes. Because of their quality, he is able to macerate the skins in the must for 18 to 24 hours prior to fermentation. This, allied to Specogna’s questing character, ensures highly individual wines with a great richness of flavour.

His Pinot Grigio ‘Ramato’ is especially individual. Ripe Pinot Grigio grapes are red in colour and because of Specogna’s passion for maceration and his aversion to fining, this wine is one of the few remaining coppery (or ramato) Pinot Grigios.

The estate was established in the early 1960’s by Graziano Specogna’s grandfather and now, four generations later, Graziano’s children are heavily involved. There is a small plant nursery on the estate in which they can do their own vine propagation, ensuring consistency throughout their vineyards.

The family now has 16 hectares of vineyard on the hill of Rocca Bernarda in the heart of the Colli Orientali DOC zone. Situated at altitudes of around 200m above sea level, they have relatively high plant density at around 4-4,500 vines per hectare.
