Lalo Anton (of Izadi and Finca Villacreces) and his family have also invested in the Toro DO, purchasing 10 hectares of Tinta de Toro (the local name for Tempranillo) vines in 2003. The 30 year old, south facing vineyards are located on sandy and clay soils in Villabuena del Puente. Winemaker Angél Ortega oversees winemaking here as he does for the other Grupo Artevino estates.
Growing conditions in this area are extreme, with cold winters, frost, strong winds and hot summers all providing challenges for the viticulturalist. The poor soils and subsequently low yields result in wines with excellent flavour and colour intensity, although high temperatures during the growing season and 3,000 sunshine hours per year can bring high alcohol levels if the vine’s canopy is not carefully managed.
