Vigne Marina Coppi

Background

Vigne Marina Coppi is a family-run estate situated on the hills of Castellania in south-eastern Piemonte. It was established in August 2003 by Marina Coppi, the daughter of Fausto Coppi (five-time winner of the Giro d’Italia and twice winner of the Tour de France who was voted Italy’s greatest sportsman of the 20th Century), and is now run by her son, Francesco Bellocchio. Francesco produces only 20,000 bottles a year from his four hectares of vineyard, which are planted primarily with Barbera, alongside Freisa and Croatina, at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare. His flagship wine ‘Fausto’ is made solely from Timorasso, a relatively little known white variety from the hills around Tortona that is said to have the ‘spirit of a red wine in the body of a white wine’. Lying mid-slope, the hillside vineyards are sheltered from the cold northerly winds and benefit from a continental climate, marked temperature differences between the seasons and days, and one of the lowest rainfall levels in Piemonte. The soils are composed of clay, limestone and sandy deposits, which give great elegance and fine aromatics to the wines. The vines are guyot-trained and are harvested by hand.
