Conterno Fantino - Barolo Sori Ginestra 1999
Tasting Notes and Scores
The 1999 Barolo Sori Ginestra, a top of the line wine, is full, plummy, and tarry on the nose, and with a great depth and definition of flavor, it will drink well from 2005 to 2020. (Daniel Thomases)

Shows dark fruit on the nose, offfering lightly toasted oak and coffee bean flavors. Full-bodied, with big, juicy tannins and new wood. Slightly too much at this point, but it will come around.—'99 Piedmont blind retrospective (2009). Best after 2011. 990 cases made.

Deep red. Pungently spicy aromas of red fruits and minerals. Sweet, lush, deep and harmonious; already revealing compelling inner-mouth perfume. Very sweet and very long, with a palate-cleansing, sappy aftertaste. Tannins are thoroughly buffered by fruit. A great showing.

Conterno-Fantino's 1999 Barolo Sorì Ginestra is quite a bit richer and deeper than the Vigna del Gris, as it always is. Leather, tobacco, menthol, licorice and savory herbs are some of the many notes that flow through to the massive, tannic finish. With time in the glass the 1999 softens a bit, but the tannins of the year and the 100% new French oak barrels will always remain.
