Wine Advocate

The 2014 Charme is a field blend from old vines aged for 15 months in used French oak. It comes in at 13.2% alcohol. In 2014--a treacherous year--the winery says that it avoided much of the rain problem with this bottling: "Harvest at Vale de Mendiz for parcels of grapes destined for Charme started early, on 1st September and the majority of grapes were picked before the effects of the rain, which during the month of September was 56.6 mm in the Cima Corgo--well up on 30 mm average over the last few decades." Not that this is ever a big, fat bottling, but it is a bit light this year and a bit subdued in flavor. That said, it evolved shockingly well in some ways while in the glass. This is certainly a year when it seems to be a dead ringer for a Burgundy (the typical short concept for this wine). When the flavors do emerge, it seems to scream Pinot more than anything else. It does lack concentration, but its fine finish and fresh feel make it enticing nonetheless. This isn't a great Charme, but it's an excellent achievement in a shaky vintage.Robert Parker (Wine Advocate #229, Feb 2017)
