La Tour Haut Brion 1979
Tasting Notes and Scores
The 1979 La Tour-Haut-Brion has a spicy bouquet, and good weight, richness, medium to full body, and length on the palate. The bouquet is beginning to mature, revealing earthy, Graves, smoky, mineral scents. This is an attractively forward La Tour-Haut-Brion which can be drunk now. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 10/84.
This is far superior to my expectations and on this evidence this good as the Haut Brion 1979 encountered just a month before. A deep garnet core with tawny rim. A touch of cigar box, capsicum and earth on the nose that lacks a little lift. Is that sandalwood developing? The palate is medium-bodied, just a little rustic but well balanced with notes of leather, black olives, forest floor and tobacco. Graceful yet conservative, the straight-laced cousin of the 1978. What you might describe as no-frills classic mature claret. Drinking now-2010. Tasted January 2007. www.robertparker.com
