A remarkable wine, and one of the great sleeper wines of the vintage, this 1982, which has a formidable plum/purple colour showing little evolution, offers up very roasted, scorched earth characteristics and notes that almost smell like burning embers and barbeque spices. Some black fruits and truffle are also inthe background. In the mouth, this behemoth is full bodied, with a huge, highly extracted, unctous texture, ferocious tannins, and remarkable intensity. It is even bigger and denser than the 1982 La Mission Haut Brion, no doubt because this wine had far more press wine added to the blend than La Mission. If there is a flaw, it might be a tendency to be slightly rustic, but this is a Bordeaux on steroids. Anticipated maturity: now-2030.
