Tasting Notes and Scores

Neal Martin

The 2013 Morey St Denis les Cheneverys 1er Cru includes over 50% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in around 30% new oak. It has a complex bouquet that demands some contemplation – blackberry, veins of dark chocolate, undergrowth, sage and just a hint of menthol develop with aeration. It feels much more mercurial in the glass compared to Virgile’s other 2013s. The palate is medium-bodied with a bold, quite saline entry. This takes a firm grip in the mouth straight from the off: masculine, a little sinewy with good volume on the finish, this is a more voluminous and powerful 2013 from the domaine that should repay long-term aging. Drink 2018-2035.

Here too there is just enough wood to notice highlighting the markedly ripe nose of essence of plum and dark raspberries that displays a top note of dried flowers. This is impressively concentrated with the abundance of dry extract imparting a suave palate feel to the middle weight flavors while it also buffers the moderately firm tannins on the serious, long and austere finish. This also offers excellent quality for its level and should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring. Drink 2021+
